This is the english version of a short movie about one of the social projects from Solar Without Borders. This project was in Senegal, in the village of Daga Youndoum. You will see some landscape, the local people, and the installation of 15 solar panels for the hospital build by the voluntary organisation SORA. Because of this project people now have electricity in the building for working at night and for certain electric devices needed in a hospital. There is also a fridge now for keeping vaccinations. Ricky from buildaroo.com interviewed Vishal from Solarmer, a company founded in 2006, and it was very fascinating to hear that they manufacture plastic solar panels! The plastic solar cells are made from polymer material which function as the photo absorbing layer for the cell. The polymer cells are around 10 times cheaper in cost relative to other silicon solar cells in the market! Moreover, they are flexible, transparent, and light weight which translates to easier installation and lower costs for the end user. That’s lower cost times two! You literally just stick them on to the surface you want them on, and a frame for the polymer cells is an option made available by the company. Solarmer has not started distributing this product yet, and they plan to be available in the market in the 2nd half of next year. They plan to enter market in a series of three stages. Initially, the polymer cells will be made available for hand-held electronic devices, subsequently smart appliances like umbrellas and bags, and finally building integration photovoltaics. Because these are plastic solar cells, there are no heavy metals or chemicals used in the manufacturing processes, and there is very little material used, 100 nanometre particularly per cell. NASA’s Phoenix spacecraft landed in the northern polar region of Mars today to begin three months of examining a site chosen for its likelihood of having frozen water within reach of the lander’s robotic arm. Radio signals received at 4:53:44 pm Pacific Time (7:53:44 pm Eastern Time) confirmed the Phoenix Mars Lander had survived its difficult final descent and touchdown 15 minutes earlier. The signals took that long to travel from Mars to Earth at the speed of light. Mission team members at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.; Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver; and the University of Arizona, Tucson, cheered confirmation of the landing and eagerly awaited further information from Phoenix later tonight. Among those in the JPL control room was NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, who noted this was the first successful Mars landing without airbags since Viking 2 in 1976. “For the first time in 32 years, and only the third time in history, a JPL team has carried out a soft landing on Mars,” Griffin said. “I couldn’t be happier to be here to witness this incredible achievement.” During its 422-million-mile flight from Earth to Mars after launching on Aug. 4, 2007, Phoenix relied on electricity from solar panels during the spacecraft’s cruise stage. The cruise stage was jettisoned seven minutes before the lander, encased in a protective shell, entered the Martian atmosphere.
